The steering committee of the Action Plan for the Trans-Maghreb Multimodal Corridor initiative meets for the first time

  • Representatives from Mauritania, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia took part in the first steering committee meeting of the Action Plan for the Trans-Maghreb Multimodal Corridor (TMC).
  • The validity of data and information is a key element for the development of the TMC Action Plan and will be the focus of efforts in the next stages of implementation.

The first steering committee meeting of the Action Plan for the Trans-Maghreb Multimodal Corridor (TMC) took place on 31 May 2022 with the participation of representatives of the Ministries of Transport and Public Works from Mauritania, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, as well as representatives of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and CETMO.

The TMC Action Plan is an initiative to promote the development of the corridor by defining, prioritising and estimating funding for infrastructure projects and operational initiatives in the TMC area. The initiative must ensure accessibility, connectivity, multimodality and interoperability in the territories connected to the corridor. The Action Plan has the economic and institutional contribution of the IsDB, as well as the support of the Group of Transport Ministers of the Western Mediterranean (GTMO 5+5), and its implementation is led by CETMO together with the collaboration of the responsible administrations in the countries along the corridor.

The first meeting served to share the motivation, objectives, content and tasks of the Action Plan with the participating experts, as well as to highlight the role of the steering committee. In this sense, the steering committee supports the data collection and the validation of the information collected and processed in order to obtain the expected results.

Later, the main activities carried out so far were presented, in particular those concerning: i) the definition of components and requirements of the TMC infrastructure; ii) a preliminary identification of infrastructure projects; iii) the characterisation of the socio-economic activity and population in the vicinity of the TMC; and iv) the launch of work for the definition of a TMC multi-criteria analysis.

As for the next steps of the TMC Action Plan, these will focus firstly on a country-by-country review of the information collected and processed, and secondly on the preparation of a questionnaire to increase the information available, especially with regard to the infrastructure characteristics and demand, the projects identified, and the economic activity of the regions served by TMC.
